Asian Casino Industry Expanding As Taiwan Approves Gaming Resort

When Macau started opening up its casino industry to foreign gaming companies, nobody knew that it could be the beginning of a gaming explosion in Asia. Since Sheldon Adelson, Steve Wynn, and other gaming tycoons have set up shop in Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, and now Taiwan have all jumped on the casino bandwagon.

Macau has become the top gaming destination in the world over the past decade, and other Asian countries have started to see that there are enough gamblers in China to support a larger gaming industry. Adelson has been the pioneer in areas such as Macau and Singapore, and he has been lobbying lawmakers in Taiwan to allow casino resorts.

The island of Matsu had its residents vote 57% in favor of allowing a casino resort on the island. Gambling is illegal in Taiwan, but lawmakers passed a bill back in 2009 that permitted casino resorts, as long as they were built off the mainland. Matsu is now in a position to be the island that first experiences the casino craze.

"Sheldon Adelson changed the face of the gaming industry in Asia, and the industry just continues to grow at a rapid rate," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "Asians have always been a major target for casinos, and now that has become even more of a fact being that they don't have to travel halfway around the world to gamble."

Macau has experienced revenue increases upwards of 50% over previous years in the last six months. The gaming boom is going to such levels in Macau that current casino owners and the government have agreed to halt any future growth in the industry. The government is hoping to diversify the economy to not be as reliant on gaming revenue.

A casino resort in Taiwan would hurt Macau, although only slightly. Taiwan residents are part of the Asian community that has helped Macau become the gaming capital of the world.

According to Union Gaming, a Matsu casino would not be the end-all for Taiwan residents visiting Macau.

"Five percent of overall visitation to Macau is from Taiwan, and Matsu is less conveniently located from Taipei than Macau.
