SPORTINGBET REJECTS WILLIAM HILL'S TAKEOVER BID OF £350

Online gaming company Sportingbet has rejected the takeover offer submitted by William Hill and GVC Holdings. Sportingbet believes that the offered price of £350 million significantly undervalues the company.

Some weeks ago online gambling company William Hill and GVC Holdings announced that they intend to make a bid for the takeover of major UK sports betting venture Sportingbet. A few days later the two companies offered a price of £350 million.

Today the board of directors of Sportingbet announced that it had evaluated the offer and decided to reject it because it "significantly undervalues the business and its future prospects". William Hill and GVC still have time until October 16th to make a new proposal with a better price.

William Hill announced about two weeks ago that it's mainly interested in taking over Sportingbet Australian operations. Sportingbet is a licensed online sports betting operator in Australia and owns a significant share of the market.

The Australian business of the company contributed to approximately 43% of the company's total revenue and 90% of its profit during Q2 2012. William Hill still does not have a strong presence in Australia and as a consequence would gain a lot from the takeover of Sportingbet.

According to the agreement with GVC, William Hill would also take over the operations and assets of Sportingbet in other regulated markets. GVC would take over the international operations and remaining .com brands of the business.

At this moment Sportingbet is a major player on the international online sports betting market. The venture is a leading force in various regulated markets such as Spain, Denmark and Greece. It formerly also had a significant presence in Turkey but last year it sold out its Turkish business to GVC Holdings for a price of£125 million.

Another company that in the past tried to take over Sportingbet was William Hill's biggest rival, Ladbrokes. Last year, Ladbrokes offered a total sum of ?460 for the takeover but the process was abandoned due to Sportingbet's regulatory problems in Turkey.
